Galway Gossamer Vest

Pattern: Sleeveless Sweater by Barbara G. Walker from “Knitting from the Top”.
Started: December 1, 2009
Finished: December 16, 2009
Yarn: Galway worsted wool by Plymouth Yarn, 210 yards/100 grams, gray over-dyed, 525 yards. Gossamer lace weight merino by Knit Picks, 440 yards/50 grams, Sunrise over-dyed, knit with 3 strands, 440 yards. Total for vest is 672 yards.
Needles: 5 and 7.
Gauge: 4.5 st/in, 6 rows/in.

Fair Isle Vest with Steeks

Pattern: my own
Started: August 22, 2008
Finished: September 16, 2008
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden 45% Silk 45% Kid Mohair 10% Lambswool, 110 yards/50 grams, and Knit Picks Shadow Merino Wool, 440 yards/50 grams, laceweight knit with 3 strands.
Needles: 6 & 4
Gauge: 5.5 stitches/in and 5 rows/in
Notes: Used 405 yards total Noro = 290 in fair isle of vest + 115 in ribbing. Used 1152 yards of Knit Picks Shadow, tripled so 384 yards. Total for vest is 789 yards.

Knit in the round bottom up – hem to shoulders. Start with provisional crochet cast on in one color for bottom edge – ribbing knit on after body of vest is complete. Steeks for armholes and V-neck, crocheted to secure before cutting, whip stitched facings to inside after ribbing was knit.

Over-dyed Noro and Shadow (original color was Purple Grape) in golden yellow.

Pattern: Based on Chevron Cardigan and Hat by Nashua Handknits
Started: 6.8.08
Finished: 8.18.08
Yarn: 109 yards of Freedom 54 yards/50 grams, 263 yards of Knit Picks Andean Silk 96 yards/50 grams – 3 strands = 88 yards, 99 yards of Jumbo 33 yards/50 grams, 880 yards of Knit Picks Glimmer Denim 440 yards/50 grams – 8 strands = 110 yards. Grand Total 406 yards. Over-dyed it all to a range of greens and browns.
Needles: #10 1/2
Gauge: 4.5 stitches/in, 6 rows/inch
Notes: I only followed the sideways construction of the Chevron Cardigan for this pullover V neck vest.

Yarn: Main Color: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, 110 yards/50 grams, 4 balls, 440 yards + contrast (see below).
Needles: #7
Gauge: 4.5 stitches/in, 6.5 rows/inch
Notes: Used 4 balls of Evergreen Wool of the Andes as the main color. For the contrast color stripes used approximately 20 yards of the following eight colors, Knit Picks Telemark in Aubergine, Burlap, Lichen and Tangelo, Andean Silk in Mustard and Lettuce, Classic Elite Skye Tweed 1272 Upland Green, and Dansk (over-dyed to brown) and approximately 135 yards of Knit Picks Andean Silk in Olive.

Pattern: Vogue Knitting Vintage Collection Classic Knits From the 1930′s to 1960′s, p. 94 Mock Cable Pullover modified using Barbara Walker’s Sleeveless Sweater in “Knitting from the Top”.

Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Forest Heather, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 110 yards/50 grams, used 7 balls.

Gauge: 4.5 stitches/inch, 6 rows/inch

Notes: The original pattern is for a long sleeved boatneck pullover, I made this as a V-neck vest, top down, seamless. I also changed the yarn from bulky to worsted weight. The pattern has a mock cable and a slip stitch formed by knitting in the row below. The original is in k3, p2 rib with a mock cable that is k3tog, p3tog, k3tog, then drop off needle. This didn’t work for my yarn. I sampled Mock Cable stitch patterns and found I liked Barbara Walker’s Baby Cable from A Treasure of Knitting Patterns p.40. In k2, p2 rib. Knit 2 together, and while stitch is still on left hand needle, knit first stitch and drop both off needle.
