Knitting

Pattern: Concentric Vest by Teva Durham Interweave Knits, Fall 2007
Started: 4.27.08
Finished: 5.02.08
Yarn: Jumbo Merino, 33 yards/50 grams, used 475 grams or 314 yards
Needles: #13
Gauge: 2.5 st/in
Notes:
There is errata on I.K. site. I knit this with seamless construction, using a provisional crochet cast on for each front, knit both before knitting the back. I put the fronts on holders before the long extension was knit. I knit the back while picking up one live stitch from each front provisional cast on row and p2tog on RS rows, k2tog on WS rows, to avoid seaming.

Pattern: Show-Off Ruffle Skirt by Kat Coyle, Lace Style
Started: 2.26.08
Finished: 10.20.08
Yarn: Knit Picks CotLin, 70% Tanguis Cotton 30% Linen, 123 yards/50 grams, over-dyed, 8 balls, 984 yards.
Needles: #3 & #2
Notes: I picked this project up after a long hibernation. Knitting the twisted purl rib in the round was slow and a lot of work. After knitting about 4” beyond the bobbles I decided to turn around, wrap a stitch and knit the other way, so now the pattern is knit 3, twist 1 purl. I highly recommend this change in the pattern starting once the bobble section is complete.

I knit the bobbles all in one vertical column. Knitting the bobbles backwards and forwards seemed to go faster than turning the work. It took me about 2 minutes to knit each bobble. I made 7 rows of bobbles instead of the 8 rows in the pattern, which took about 500 yards.

Pattern: Icarus by Miriam L. Felton, I.K. Summer 2006
Started: September 21, 2008
Finished: October 9, 2008
Yarn: Cashmere, Mama Llama, 400 yards/50 grams, 760 yards
Needles: #4 Options
Gauge: Blocked to 78″ x 31″
Notes:
I counted all the stitches to make sure I would have enough yarn, thank goodness I did (see numbers below), it helped me to know where the half way point was and how many repeats of Chart 1 to delete to have enough yarn to finish.

Here are the numbers for the pattern as written: 61,610 total number of stitches. 1/2 way is at row 23 of the final rows of Chart 1 (19-34) – the stitch count is actually 30,808, three more than exactly half, on row 184. Note that this 1/2 way row count is different than the numerical half which is 127 rows which ends up at row 38 of the third repeat of Chart 1 and a stitch count of 14,519.

I wrote to Miriam and she mentioned the rule of thumb that at 1/2 of the rows (see above) it takes 1/3 of the yarn. The second 1/2 of the rows takes 2/3 of the yarn. For this shawl that would have been conservative, putting 1/2 way at row 97 for my amount of yarn. By counting stitches I had more accurate numbers with which to decide when to stop Chart 1.

I knit 3 repeats (rows 19-42) + 4 rows of Chart 1 plus all the border charts.

My total stitch count is 35,516. The first ball knit 21,179. My 1/2 way point is at row 4 of Chart 2. Adding another repeat of Chart 1 would have added 15,250 stitches or 36 grams of yarn, my shawl is plenty big enough, so another repeat, or following the pattern as written would have been too much.

Pattern: Vogue Knitting Vintage Collection Classic Knits From the 1930′s to 1960′s, p. 94 Mock Cable Pullover modified using Barbara Walker’s Sleeveless Sweater in “Knitting from the Top”.
Started: 9.5.07
Finished: 9.22.07
Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Forest Heather, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 110 yards/50 grams, used 7 balls.
Needles: #7 Knit Picks Options
Gauge: 4.5 stitches/inch, 6 rows/inch
Ravelry link: Mock Cable Vest
Notes: The original pattern is for a long sleeved boatneck pullover, I made this as a V-neck vest, top down, seamless. I also changed the yarn from bulky to worsted weight. The pattern has a mock cable and a slip stitch formed by knitting in the row below. The original is in k3, p2 rib with a mock cable that is k3tog, p3tog, k3tog, then drop off needle. This didn’t work for my yarn. I sampled Mock Cable stitch patterns and found I liked Barbara Walker’s Baby Cable from A Treasure of Knitting Patterns p.40. In k2, p2 rib. Knit 2 together, and while stitch is still on left hand needle, knit first stitch and drop both off needle.

Pattern: Viva Poncho Christina Stork Greta 2 with hood, p. 38 – revised
Started: 5.22.07
Finished: 6.17.07
Yarn: Wool boucle (unidentified from weaving stash) 77 yards/ 50 grams, Color Gray
Needles: Knit Picks Options #11
Gauge: 2.5 st/in, 4 rows/in
Notes: I am knitting this as a capelet – just to the elbow. Instead of knitting from the top down in the round, I’m knitting this the same way the Fluted Ribs capelet was knit – in short rows from hem to neckline, start with a crocheted cast on, end with three needle bind off.

I like this capelet, my first with a hood. The yarn was not fun to knit, the bumpy boucle made it difficult to count stitches and row.

Pattern: Knit 2 Together Mel Clark
Started: 3.14.07
Finished: 4.17.07
Yarn: Unidentified Linen/Cotton rag on cone from from weaving stash, approximately 385 yards/ 50 grams. Overdyed in Procion MX, used 300 grams, knit with double strand.
Needles: Knit Picks Options #4 & #5
Gauge: 5.25 st/in, 6.5 rows/in on #5
Ravelery link: Linen Kilt
Notes: I love this skirt. I’ve worn it a couple of times, once on an 87′ day and once on a cool evening. Both times it was comfortable, cool and warm – go figure. It stays in place and moves beautifully, I am so glad that I made it. I got a lot of nice compliments on it too!
I knit the 1×1 ribbing at the waist in garter stitch ribbing to decrease the amount of stretch. (Knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, repeat to end. Next round knit, alternate these two rounds.) Garter stitch ribbing made a huge difference, I highly recommend it.
